Skeuomorphic User Interface Design In The Age Of AI
I spent my Caturday expanding my AI research into AI driven design, doing the things that really scared people say AI will never be able to do.
I have seen how famous artists treated a newcomer to the scene, someone whose art-style was special, and I have become Doom.
My art experiments today started by fixing jaggies, a cute word, that describe jagged pixel highlights and calls for smoothing them out.
I was working in an art area called generative art, style called kitbashing.
Or more precisely Generative Hard-surface Modeling, in 2.5D, not 3D.
And the result is me recreating most of the web page graphics, that even some designers can only dream about.
I added a little sticker at the end, and I felt ages pass in a world without AI, it was just rewrite-upon rewrite that AI did effortlessly and no human would try.
If I outsourced this, it would cost hundreds of thousands, and never ever, really fully work, AI instead improved it.
AI does invent, it collaborates, and it designs, the AI I am using is restrained and not yet set to top quality.
Then I worked on a circular motif, also generative, and I told AI to extract 1 pixel tall images from surfaces.
What this does, is pick up pixels that represent seams between shiny surfaces, I told AI treat it as a radius loop it a circle and the string of pixels came to life.
I created an entire studio, and it is capable of reinterpreting strings of pixels, as gradients, synthesizing entire stretches of them.
Think of the gap between the trunk of your car and the rest of the body, I used to store all the dark pixels, now I just say how long the darkness is.
What color does it end with, and what color it should transition into, and how long should that transition occur.
This is called COLOR PICKING, the artists who should worry, I think compare it to nose picking, I see it as a force of nature.
From color picking, I moved into a new are, where I pick colors, but use them on generative hard surface modeling.
All day, I have really strained and constrained my AI, asking it to work with low quality generated images.
I wanted it to invent solutions, I wanted to be stopped, but in the final beautiful test, I told the SOTA AI to use its powers.
And it did, it took color picking to its absolute maximum, extremely detailed high resolution wooden textures.
Few years ago creating these high quality objects would take week, it took AI seconds.
What really got to me, was it taking my manual labor of image bashing, a form of art by the way, that is hated, and looked down upon, by artists.
And it upgraded it, retaining the spirit I crafted completely, it made it into a full resolution object of quality I called perfect.
AI is now capable of creating an image, that can have its sides cut off, and then the middle repeated to make a re-sizable frame for a web page (9-slice).
Under bootstrap this is not just about resizing the browser window, but to display the same extremely intricate graphics on phone and desktop.
The entry into web design and beautiful computer user interface design is open, search the internet for Skeuomorphic User Interface design and ask your AI to set you up.
